Mapping is a powerful epidemiological tool, and where resources permit, detailed maps can aid in initial assessment and monitoring of filariasis elimination programs.

Tools for mapping

  • Tools for rapid epidemiological mapping using rapid assessment procedure have been developed and standardized.

  • Using RAP and grid sampling technique areas can be identified and stratified for intervention. (The REMFIL technique)

  • Use of RAP in a stepwise manner can be effective for declaring transmission free zones.

The tests to be used stepwise are:
  • Questionnaire technique.

  • physical examination by health workers for filarial disease and Geographic Information System(GIS)

  • ICT (Immuno Chomatographic Test) for antigenaemia

  • PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) for the detection of infection in pools of mosquito collected using traps.
